Project Description: |
The Parent Education, Encouragement and Resource program (P.E.E.R.) will provide for the conduct of intensive outreach and virtual education directed toward young parents and migrant workers with pre-school aged children residing in Belle Glade, Florida and surrounding areas. This outreach shall include virtual training and education for parents of pre-school aged children via television, radio, and print mediums as well as live events and engagements. The program will also provide enhanced referral support and case management for youth and families. P.E.E.R. shall be administered by Lutheran Social Services Florida through its P.E.P.P.I. Head Start Child Development Center located in Belle Glade, Florida. PEPPI is purposefully designed to improve the quality of life for ultra-at-risk preschool children by providing comprehensive services to families in Belle Glade--a poverty-stricken area populated largely by struggling, low-income families and migrant workers. Every child enrolled in PEPPI learns basic educational skills in a clean and safe environment and receives a well-balanced breakfast, lunch, and a healthy mid-afternoon snack daily. Parents receive referrals to medical, dental, and mental health professionals. Every parent is required to play an active role in PEPPI including: participating in school activities, volunteering in the classrooms, serving as chaperones on school field trips, and maintaining the school building and property.
A tentative schedule of outreach topics for 2008/2009 include: Parenting, Literacy, Early childhood Education, Spousal Abuse, AIDS/HIV, Job Training, Prenatal Infancy Care, Nutrition, Substance Abuse, Family Budgeting, among Child Abuse and Neglect, among others.
