This Youth Central Initiative has statewide interest due in large part to the ever-increasing demand upon student to excel in the area of education to perform on the FCAT. Further, the need to address mentoring, drug awareness and truancy intervention is critical through out the state of Florida particularly as it relates to inner city-at-risk youth residing in high crime neighborhoods. |

Project Description: |
The "Youth Central" Reading Initiative - Mentoring - Drug & Alcohol Awareness & Truancy Intervention will provide services to 300 area youth residing in high crime socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. A needs assessment will be performed on each youth to determine their primary area of service needs, i.e., drugs/alcohol education, educational tutorial services and or the need for truancy intervention. Services will be rendered five (5) days a week. This initiative will work in partnership with area schools, school resource officers and with Orange County Children's Commission to ensure that the targeted population is reached. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
70% of youth participating in the program will increase their ability to read with comprehension and data manipulation as evident by pre/post test scores.
80% of youth participating in the program will show an increase in their awareness and knowledge of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse as evident by pre/post test scores.
50% of youth participating in mentoring/truancy intervention will return to school as evident by attendance records.
30% of parents of youth will participate in program's parent mentoring as evident by attendance sheets. |
