Project Description: |
The latest growth and successes of Hebni's program have inspired Hebni to look for ways to bring its services closer to the community. Hebni has entered into a long term lease agreement on an office building in Orlando's 32805 zip code, which has the largest percentage of African American residents and the highest poverty level in the city. The 2005 Median Family Income is estimated at $18,232, with 98.8% of the population being Black. 52.54% of the population in this area live below the poverty line. Hebni has already recieved commitment from the City of Orlando to fund $250,000 of the renovations at Hebni's new office site to create a space where Hebni can provide on-site individual and group nutrition counseling, healthy cooking classes, wellness education classes and seminars, exercise demonstrations, health screenings, and a community resource center. Hebni will be adding four test kitchens to hold cooking classes, a large classroom to hold workshops and seminars, a large conference room for meetings and group counseling sessions, a library with nutrition and health resources available to the community, computer stations with internet access to nutrition and health websites, and new offices for Hebni staff, so individual nutritional counseling can be held in private sessions. Hebni's Nutrition Resource Center will allow Hebni to provide an array of nutrition and wellness education services directly to the community at a location that is easily accessible, so that Hebni can reach the populations who are at the greatest risk of diet related diseases. Hebni is requesting $250,000 to fund operating costs associated with providing these on-site wellness and cooking classes for adults and youth, and nutrition and health library resources which can be utilized by residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. |
