Project Description:
According to the National Institute of Health, more than twice as many children are overweight now than three decades ago. The problem with being overweight is more than just size-it puts kids at-risk for serious illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. All parents want their children to be healthy, but many lack the tools needed to make more informed decisions and dont know where to start. To that end, S. H. I. N. E.! ( a program for 9-13 year old boys and girls) focuses on three key behaviors that families can work on together:increasing physical activity (reduce TV watching and video/computer games); create healthy eating habits (cooking classes); and understanding the emotional connection with food (individual, group, and family counseling).. The S. H. I. N. E.! Parent Handbook will not only allow parents and children to journal their progress throughout the program, but will assist parents and children in sustaining changes made during the program.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
At the beginning of the program, each childs height, weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol will be taken by their primary care physician. By the end of the program, the weight loss experienced by each child should also translate to the stabilization of both their blood pressure and their cholesterol, thereby significantly decreasing their risk of having heart disease. Moreover, the entire family will have adopted a more healthy lifestyle, which will sustain the results obtained during the program and ensure long-term success.
