Project Description: |
The Town of Eatonville is seeking to design a 20,000 square foot Arts and Cultural Museum. The museum will be named the Zora Neale Hurston Arts and Cultural Museum. The Museum will not only focus on African heritage, but will also have meeting rooms, class rooms, cultural educational facilities, conference room, multi-media technology room, and other amenities offering a conglomeration of cultural opportunities for persons visiting the museum. The facility design will include a wide veranda and low over hanging roofs to welcome guests and promote community interaction. The entry will be easily identifiable through the use of a 2 story atrium space featuring a cupola. The goal for the interior design and special layout is to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that is functional, efficient, and enabling users to intuitively gravitate toward the area desired. The building itself will pay tribute to Central Florida history through the incorporation of elements found in traditional Florida architecture. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
: Eatonville is located in Orange County, Florida, approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Orlando. The Town is popularly recognized as the oldest incorporated African American municipality in America, which is The Town that freedom built. It is the hometown of Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960), charismatic writer, folklorist, and anthropologist. Over the past nineteen (19) years, the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities has grown into one of the premier cultural arts events in Orange County, and commanding national recognition. The Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Eatonville has the expectation that a cultural opportunity like the Hurston Museum could make a substantial economic impact on the Town and the entire Central Florida Region. |
