This program is regional in scope and is intended to meet a documented need of statewide interests. The Big Cypress Basin Watershed Initiative have prioritized substantive water quality construction and restoration projects that will have a significant impact on reducing nutrient loads to impaired water bodies within the basin. These projects will produce measurable results and have tangible community support.

Project Description:
The purpose of the Big Cypress Basin Watershed Initiative is to develop federal, state, and stakeholder consensus while prioritizing substantive short term water quality improvement construction projects that will immediately accelerate progress toward reducing nutrient loading while improving water quality and habitat. The restoration team focused on those projects that provide multiple diverse benefits. These benefits include: improving water quality in priority and impaired water bodies, water storage, flood protection, restoration, public recreation, and environmental education through outreach.

Each project selected by the Big Cypress Basin Watershed Initiative was chosen because of the project�s diverse benefits. Each and every project has a water quality component that will significantly reduce nutrient loadings and pollutants. These water quality components include retention, detention, storage, filter marshes, sediment traps, hydrologic and plant community restoration.
