Project Description:
The proposed Family Life Center will serve as a hub for families who reside on the south side of Leon County. Currently this district is considered to be the low income area for Tallahassee as well as be recognize by the Department of Juvenile Justice in the top 5 Zip Codes which have the highest juvenile crime rate in the Leon County area. There were 656 juvenile delinquent charges among youth in the 32310 zip code area during the 2001-2002 period. This zip code area had the largest amount of charges and referrals during this period. Additionally, the failure and high school drop-out rate is high in the southside area as well. Through the creation of a Family Life Center both youth and parents will be allowed to empower themselves and become productive citizens in our community. By doing so will decrease the crime rate and bust the income levels in the area. The Proposed Family Life Center will allow the following services to be conducted, Academic Tutoring, Vocational Training, Home Economics Training, GED Program, Youth Recreation and Training area(Gym), Swimming Lessons, Health Services, Outreach and Senior Care Services. Currently, Tabernacle Church utilizes several facilities to coordinate at least 3 of these activities. The space is inadequate to serve the amount of families who request assistance and therefore the need for such a family center is warranted. The proposed facility is approximately 10,000 square feet which will include 4 class rooms for instructional courses, 1 computer lab, a basketball court and swimming pool area. This request is to assist with construction of the facility so that families in the community may have the opportunity to improve their quality of life.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Individuals and families will become exposed to various opportunities that will allow them to lessen their dependency on welfare and other economic assistance programs. By doing so, families will become empowered and obtain employment which will increase their level of income and citizenship in the community. Regularly Tabernacle tracks and documents the services provide to families in need of services. During the period 2003-2204, Tabernacle Church Outreach Ministry has funded over 500 families. Services consisted of food donations, clothing donations, and gift cards/certificates from Winn Dixie. These services are coordinated in a temporary facility which cannot handle the influx of individuals who attend the food/clothing drives. Additionally there is not enough space to store the donated items. This temporary facility also houses the tutorial program. The tutorial program can only accommodate approximately 25 youth primarily due to the size of the 2 rooms that it utilizes. Documentation of services is kept on file and may be submitted upon request.
