Statewide Interest: |
The Minority Community High Risk HIV/AIDS Outreach and Abstinence Education Initiative, "Being Positive by Staying Negative" health education project is to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS among school age youth (13-19). This education initiative has statewide interest as most young people diagnosed with AIDS before the age of 30 were infected with HIV in their teens and early 20's. The CDC estimates that nearly 50% of all cases before the age of 25 are acquired sexually. Data reveals that minority teens in Orange County have some of the highest rates of HIV in the state (1 in 90 blacks in Florida). This initiative will assist in lowering the rates of HIV/AIDS and other STD's throughout the state. |

Project Description: |
The program will provide HIV/AIDS education to youth and young adults particularly of the Hip Hop generation in an effort to educate and dissuade callous attitudes and behaviors regarding sexually transmitted diseases. This initiative will work in partnership with local public schools, especially failing schools, community and faith based organizations, juvenile justice institutions and programs as well as target socio-economically disadvantaged communities as the participant base during the twelve month funding period. This training will increase their knowledge of HIV/AIDS through promotion of healthier attitudes towards making life-saving choices. This initiative will aggressively target at risk youth and young adults in seven Florida counties. |
