Sponsors: Wilson

Statewide Interest:
By reducing the need for case management services for multi-cultural, isolated, underserved, and low-income families. There has been an emerging public health crisis among African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans - the Silent Epidemic of Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's disease is more prevalent among African-Americans than among whites - one study estimates that African-Americans are four times as likely to have Alzheimer's disease than Caucasians. Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to develop Alzheimer's disease. There are approximately 320,000 African-American elders and approximately 470,000 Hispanic elders in Florida. Dementia affects 10% of those over age 65 and 50% of those over age 85.
