Statewide Interest: |
By reducing the need for case management services for multi-cultural, isolated, underserved, and low-income families.
There has been an emerging public health crisis among African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans - the Silent Epidemic of Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's disease is more prevalent among African-Americans than among whites - one study estimates that African-Americans are four times as likely to have Alzheimer's disease than Caucasians. Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to develop Alzheimer's disease. There are approximately 320,000 African-American elders and approximately 470,000 Hispanic elders in Florida. Dementia affects 10% of those over age 65 and 50% of those over age 85. |

- OUTREACH: Reaching out ONE-ON-ONE to African Americans and Hispanics. Education and training on local services and support. Increase awareness on disaster preparedness including hurricane response.
- PUBLIC EDUCATION: Present, speak, and train individuals and groups to increase awareness and knowledge of Alzheimers disease. Develop a culturally appropriate awareness campaign through faith-based and other community organizations that includes key leaders and members of the target communities.
