Statewide Interest: |
The City of Wauchula's drinking water system has inadequate capacity to meet the needs of projected population growth and to insure a safe, available supply of drinking water during periods of drought. The aged distribution system is in need of rehabilitation to prevent contamination of the water supply. Construction of well #5, improvements at the Water Treatment Plant, rehabilitation of the distribution system, and installation of new meters will meet DEP regulations and protect the City water supply from contamination and reduce the consequences of potential droughts. |

Project Description: |
The City of Wauchula, like the rest of Hardee County, is a part of a State of Florida designated "Area of Critical Economic Concern". Among various factors suppressing the City's opportunity for economic recovery from the devastating impact of the 2004/2005 hurricane seasons is the need for an expanded drinking water system. The project will increase the City's drinking water capability from 1.15 MGD to 2.3 MGD through the construction of well #5 and improvements at the water treatment plant. Additionally, rehabilitation of the City's aged drinking water distribution system will reduce operating and maintenance cost and will reduce the risk of system contamination. Installation of new meters will assist the City in controlling system losses. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Improves the reliability of the drinking water supply; increases the City's water supply to meet projected demand; transfers groundwater withdrawl away from the Peace River thereby minimizing the impact to river water levels and the assocaited wetlands; reduces operating and maintenance costs; reduces leakage, low water pressure and possible system contamination, all of which may result in poor water quality and impaired fire delivery systems. |
