Requester: Carol Ann Wehle, Executive Director Organization: South Florida Water Management District

Project Title: THE FLORIDA KEYS WATER RESOURCE INITIATIVE Date Submitted 1/4/2008 9:58:55 AM

Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
The FL Keys is an Area of Critical State Concern and an ecosystem of statewide and national significance, including mainland Americas only living barrier coral reef and the largest documented semi-continuous seagrass bed on earth. It contains the nations most visited national marine sanctuary and its boundaries encompass John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Floridas most visited state park. All levels of government, businesses and community organizations are working to improve water quality in the Florida Keys, which has a favorable effect on our environment and economy.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Pollutant loading reduction to nearshore waters will improve water quality and reduce potential number of beach closings. Reduced nutrient enrichment of our nearshore waters will protect our biological communities. Wastewater reuse will be used to augment our limited water supply. Biological and water quality assessments will quantify ecosystem changes. Xeriscape will conserve water. Environmental education will heighten public awareness of our dire need to conserve and protect our fragile water resources.

Will this project reduce pollutant loadings to a water management district designated 'priority' surface water body? Yes
Name of water body: Florida Keys

Describe, specifically, how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings:
Pollutant loading of numerous parameters will be reduced via best management practices (BMP), outfall reduction, and innovative stormwater retrofit technologies such as baffle boxes, sediment sups, skimmers, and injection wells. Point and nonpoint source loadings will be reduced greatly given the treatment approaches now available for use in this unique ecosystem. It is imperative to eliminate sources of pollution to the nearshore waters of the FL Keys
