DFYIT impacts literally tens of thousands of students at each school and in each community. The DFYIT members are drug free and willing to prove it by submitting to an initial drug test and subsequent random drug screenings throughout their membership. Membership is strictly voluntary. Students meet twice a month in their schools or community clubs where they are exposed to a science based drug, alcohol and tobacco curriculum. In addition they are engaged in leadership skills, self esteem, life skills and social marketing education to help them become proactive prevention peer leaders in their school and community. Community service is a key component to the DFYIT program engaging community bonding. DFYIT provides opportunities for community service activities such as working at food banks, senior centers or on community health and wellness fairs. Members are recognized for their drug free status by going on educational field trips and receiving rewards and incentives for leading pro social and pro healthy lifestyles. Members are comprised of students from diverse cultural and socio economic backgrounds (70% are minority students) and alternative schools. Senior High school DFYIT members are eligible for DFYIT scholarships (funded from unrestricted contributions) to continue their education at a college or technical level. The DFYIT program has received significant recognition as one of a handful of full prevention providers accredited by CARF. DFYIT has received Best Practices recognition from the Department of Children and Families, and has been selected as one to the top three prevention programs in the state of Florida by FADAA. Locally, the Miami Chamber of Commerce awar5ded DFYIT the NOVO award for innovative excellence for not for profit management of agencies with budgets over one million dollars.
