Project Description:
Miami Childrens Hospital (MCH) has been a provider of mental health services for children and adolescents for over 30 years. Approximately 850 children gain access to our inpatient services per year. Approximately 85% of psychiatry patients admitted to MCH present with suicide ideation or a suicide attempt. Approximately 98% of MCH psychiatric patients are at risk for suicide by nature of their having a mood disorder, history of a previous suicide attempt, or substance abuse. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in young people. Assessment using the Columbia University Teen Screen can detect many of the risk factors for suicide and lead to early intervention. This project will afford voluntary screenings for teens in the Miami-Dade County School system enabling 8,000 children and adolescents to be screened per year. Those identified by a positive assessment will receive a recommendation for a complete mental health evaluation. A school-based screening program does not currently exist in Miami-Dade County. The Program will also offer psycho-educational programs to the teachers and parents about mental health disorders in children and adolescents, e.g. anxiety, self-injury, depression, substance abuse, providing more individuals to assess the risk of students for possible suicide and to solicit psychiatric help... By educating those closest to the individual thinking of suicide, we may be able to help prevent suicides. Possible interventions to include group therapies will be offered to students as needed
