The Upper St. Johns River Basin contains a semi-structural system of water management areas, marsh conservation areas, and marsh restoration areas covering approximately 166,500 acres. The system will reduce pollutant loadings by reducing stormwater discharges associated with flooding, improving water quality (i.e., total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus), reducing freshwater and stormwater discharges to the Indian River Lagoon (an estuary), and restoring or enhancing wetland habitats.
