Statewide Interest: |
The Juvenile Workforce Development Initiative (JWDI) initiative has a dual statewide interest; the first is the continued reduction of juvenile recidivism by developing employability skills training among youthful offenders under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice which will ultimately lead to permanent job placement thereby making them productive citizens of their respective communities. The second statewide interest is to further economic development through the utilization of an untapped revenue generating, tax-paying workforce (age appropriate youth). The impact of this initiative will alleviate the potential of an increase in the number of violent crimes committed by juvenile offenders in the State of Florida. This initiative is presently providing services in Orange, Lake, Miami-Dade and Pinellas counties. Orange, Miami-Dade and Pinellas Counties represent three of the seven counties in Florida that represent over 50% of all youth arrested in the sixty-seven (67) counties in the state. |

Project Description: |
The JWDI initiative will provide employability skills training and job placement utilizing the Association of Service Providers for Employability and Career Training (ASPECT) community based training curriculum created in British Columbia. Three (3) of the seven (7) JWDI sites represent over 50% of all juvenile referrals in the State of Florida, to which this initiative is targeted to combat the high rates of juvenile arrest and recidivism. This initiative will also cultivate a relationship with the business community in an effort to create a seamless transition from juvenile offender to the workforce industry. Up to 200 youth transitioning from juvenile justice community supervision and/or residential commitment programs will receive employability skills training to assist in their workforce transition. |
