Project Description:
The Community Outreach Center of Excellence (COCOE), Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides support for the Young Womens Scholastic & Physical Fitness Program (YWSPFP), which is designed for the advancement of K-12 Girls and Undergraduate Women. The YWSPFP has been in existence since 1997. The specific Service Areas include but are not limited to the following: 1. Education 2. Fitness & Health 3. Teen Pregnancy Prevention 4. Drop-out Prevention 5. Positive Self-Esteem: Mind, Body, Spirit There is an urgent need to identify support for young women and girls in order to successfully continue the service of providing multi-level Support and Activities in K-12 Academic areas (with emphasis on Science and Mathematics) for 4th - 12th grade girls, as well as Health & Fitness initiatives to combat Juvenile Obesity and other health risks. The Young Womens Scholastic & Physical Fitness Program provides multi-level activities and support in the areas of Science and Mathematics education and other Academic areas to the 4th - 12th grade girls and undergraduate women participants. In addition to the Academic services provided, it is similarly critical to address the physical fitness needs of all participants as a proactive effort to address childhood obesity in todays youth. The Young Womens Scholastic & Physical Fitness Program (YWSPFP) is designed to address these needs by providing a broad base of opportunities and experiences with a wholistic approach of enriching the Mind, Body and Spirit through activities in the areas of Education, Physical Fitness, Health & Hygiene, Career Exploration, Youth Motivation & High Self Esteem Seminars, Etiquette, Math & Science Enrichment, Behavior Modification, and other critical support to minority, majority, and at-risk K-12 girls. The Young Womens Scholastic & Physical Fitness Program (YWSPFP) serves participants primarily from Volusia County and the surrounding areas. Academic areas addressed include Math, Science, Reading, History, Writing, Public Speaking and others, and participants receive Fitness Level Evaluations and training by a Certified Personal Trainer. Swimming with certified instructors including a former Olympic Coach is also included at designated times. The YWSPFP is a year-round program and includes Field-Trips. YEAR TWO ADDITIONAL SERVICES Services provided during the First Year will be continued each year, and it is anticipated that the number of participants will significantly increase each year as a result. During the second year of the 24-Month, pilot additional Services and Activities will be considered which may include but not be limited to the following: Brain Bowl Challenge: This service would provide opportunities for further Critical Thinking exercises, including entry into scholastic grade-level competitions that address Womens History, US History, and World History. Other topics would include Environment education for preserving and respecting the planet, understanding State, Local, National, and International Government structures and formats, as well as other pertinent topics. The Brain Bowl would also include Chess instruction at the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels, and participants will be allowed to compete in Local, Regional, State, and perhaps National Chess Competitions. College Selection & Applying for Aid/Scholarships: We have found that many youth and their parents need assistance in understanding and completing college applications, financial aids, and identifying scholarship sources. This service would include parents/guardians in sessions with the child and a qualified staff member/volunteer. This service would be provided primarily to Juniors and Seniors, though early education on these topics would be provided to all participants. Leadership Skills Development: Workshops on leadership skills will be provided, as well as Toastmaster type forums where participants will have opportunities to exhibit new found skills and confidence that will be of great value to their total development in all academic and personal/social arenas. Financial Literacy, Saving & Wealth Building: This service would focus greatly upon educating the participants on the value of knowing how to manage their money, investing, and opening savings accounts. This service would also include an Investment Club, with guidance of a certified investment planner/financial management professional. Swim for Your Health: Swim lessons with Certified Instructors and Lifeguards will be provided. Though beginner swimming will be offered during the first year, in the 2nd year participants will have an opportunity to join the YWSPFP Swim Team with a former Olympic Coach. The goal is to make swimming a Lifelong activity for them that may be passed on to generations in support healthy Youth.
