Statewide Interest: |
Current statistics for violent crimes in the state except for murder were up for all categories. Law enforcement agencies must be innovative in finding ways and using modern tools to fight crime. Gunshot detection and location systems or other enabling technologies which allow police departments to reduce fatalities , increase street safety and protect lives even locally are certainly of the greatest benefit to the State population. |

Project Description: |
This project includes the acquisition and installation of a gunshot detection/ location system for the Police Department. For its population of less than 15,000, the city of Opa-locka experiences an inordinate number of reported shots fired, gunshot wounds, as well as gunshot fatalities. Statewide it is still one of the highest statistics for a municipality of its size. In a year period, the Department responded to 335 reports of shots investigated 39 wounded incidents and 7 homicides. This number does not account for an even larger number of " shots-fired" that go unreported. Having only 35 sworn personnel, it becomes necessary for the Department to seek to acquire and implement new strategies for addressing criminal activity. New technology such as "Shotspotter" can offset limited staffing ,improve police response , increase safety of the public and reduction of crime in general. |
