Project Description:
In 2005: There were 3,675 civilians that lost their lives as the result of fire. There were 17,925 civilian injuries that occurred as the result of fire. There were 115 firefighters killed while on duty. Fire killed more Americans than all natural disasters combined. 83 percent of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residences. 1.6 million fires were reported. Many others went unreported, causing additional injuries and property loss. Direct property loss due to fires was estimated at $10.7 billion. An estimated 31,500 intentionally set structure fires resulted in 315 civilian deaths. Intentionally set structure fires resulted in an estimated $664 million in property damage. This project would deliver contemporary fire and life safety information to elementary age children through a series of interactive video screens fixed to a house-shaped structure. First at the Tampa Firefighter's Museum and then as a traveling exhibit to Children's Museums or Science Museums around Florida. Each screen would be placed on the structure in a location representative where the room would be in a home. Information delivered would include ways to recognize and avoid common hazards such as locating a space heater under curtains that could catch on fire; overloading electrical circuits; not locating smoke detectors in the correct places in a home. The children would be prompted to point to the fire hazards in each room- when the screen is touched at the hazard, affirmative text or audio will confirm the correct answer and provide a sentence or two of additional information. If all the fire hazards are not located in a particular room, a "fire" will erupt from it and burn the room. The screens would be mounted to a structure shaped like a cross section of a typical two story house, kitchen, living room, and garage on the first level, bathroom, hallway and bedrooms on the second level, and attic above. Each screen would be programmed with a still image of a room in which many hazards are present. Children would interact with the screens by pointing out the unsafe conditions. For special presentations the screens can be programmed so that they each show a part of a whole image, of a fire, of a speeding fire truck, or a fire safety message. To carry this important message beyond the walls of the Tampa Firefighter Museum, it will be built in a modular fashion so that it can be crated and shipped to other children's museums and/or firefighter museums within the state of Florida.
