Project Description:
LHANC is requesting $500,000 for the provision of senior center-based congregate meals to low-income, minority, at-risk elderly from throughout Miami-Dade County. This request is being made as a result of increased costs of doing business coupled with an overall reduction of available funds for said services. Last year LHANC was faced with having to eliminate approximately 300 individuals for their congregate meals program, many of whom rely exclusively on the one meal that they receive at the senior center daily. The average senior center participant is a widowed woman aged 82 years of age with an income of $540 per month. The overall impact on the wellbeing of the seniors whose services will be discontinued goes far beyond a meal. The congregate meal brings them to the senior center, but once here, they have access to health screenings and education, recreation, socialization, education, and an array of services that helps to keep them both active and engaged within their community and with their peers. With this request, LHANC will be able to serve approximately 350 seniors and provide them with a hot nutritionally balanced meal for the period of 1 year. Funds are requested on a recurring basis because if funds are not available year after year, the seniors receiving services through these funds will have to be cut and be once again placed on the waiting list for services until additional funding can be identified. This request was funded in 2007-2008 for $400,000. Should this project not be funded again this year, the agency will have to cut these 300 seniors who, thanks to the funding received, are able to receive at least one hot, nutritionally balanced meal.
