Project Description:
Funds will be used to create a pilot program for newborn screening for the Fragile X gene in children born at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Fragile X is the leading, discovered, genetic cause for autism and mental retardation. Newborn screening would provide for the ability to commence Speech, Occupational, and Sensory therapy's from birth thus proving and early advantage for normalcy and thus reducing future Medicaid costs which can be incurred if therapy commences with a child at a much later point.
