Project Description:
Construction of a fire station in Midway to improve efficiency and public safety improvision of service. The City of Midway, Florida,is divided by railroad tracks owned and maintained by CSR Railrod. Although the tracks do not evenly split the City, the bulk of the City is to the South of the tracks. The City's main fire station is located next to Midway City Hall, which is located on the North side of the railroad tracks. The City of Midway Volunteer Fire Department under an agreement with Gadsden County Fire Services provides fire service to a five mile radius of Miday into the unincorporated areas of Gadsden County. A problem may arise if a train is blocking County Road 268(Martin Luther King Blvd, or Highbridge Road). If the road is blocked, the problem could be twofold. We might have a problem getting our volunteer firefighters to the fire station to pick up a fire truck or we might have a proble getting the truck(s) from one side of the tracks to the other side. There are two ways to get across the tracks: one is Martin Luther King Boulevard, the second is Brickyard Road. Generally the trains are so long that they block both intersections, which eliminates our ability to use either road.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Improved fire services to the South part of the City. By constructing a second station on the southside of the tracks, generally a couple miles to West on CR 268, we can widen our fire service protection area because the five mile radius move farther to the West. We will also be closed to Joe Budd, a park area owned by the State of Florida. We currently do provide fire service in that area, however, the second fire station will be much closer. The second station also will allow a much quicker response time to residents living on the southside of the CSR railroad tracks. The City will provide the land and most of the landscaping, driveway areas.
