Project Description:
This project addresses a chronic sediment control problem discharging directly into the Choctawhatchee Bay. The Bay has been identified as a Category 3c waterbody which means the Bay meets the Planning List criteria for TMDL development and is Potentially Impaired for one or more designated purposes. The existing stormwater drainage system in the project area was constructed before the implementation of Florida's stormwater treatment rules. The current discharge of the basin is via a ditch network consisting of secondary conveyance ditches of vaying sizes with a top width of one to two feet with 2:1 side slopes to the final primary conveyance discharge ditch. The proposed project will provide roadway stabilization to eliminate sediment disposition and provide stormwater treatment of the 90 acre sub-basin prior to the discharge to the Bay. The roads in the project area continue to erode and contribute sediment from stormwater runoff to the Bay. As a resul;t of the sediment loading, habitat is silted inas benthic invertebrates and seagrasses are destroyed. In addition, suspended solkids in the water column and increased turbidity reduce light penetration essential to seagrasses for photosynthesis to occur. Their have been recent outbreaks of Harmful Algal Bloomsd and their effects on the Bay's food webs. Our objective is justified based on recent events in the Bay such as the approximate 50 dead bottlenose dolphins. This project will reduce 80% of the turbidity loading from the project area, reduce 45% of water color levels, reduce total suspended solids by 75% and will increase the pH by 30%.
