Project Description: |
The City of Lakeland contains 38 named lakes and numerous smaller lakes, which are invaluable to the community providing opportunities for recreation and a sanctuary for wildlife. Most of these highly urbanized lakes have documented water quality problems resulting from stormwater discharges. In particular high levels of nutrients have adversely impacted in-lake ecology and pose a risk to human health and safety. To proactively address these water quality issues, the City of Lakeland, has teamed with state and local partners to monitor lake water quality, allowing for the development of feasibility studies and restoration programs. The City of Lakeland, in partnership with the Southwest Florida water management district seeks to implement a series of algal turf scrubbing systems to reduce both incoming pollutant loads and in-lake nutrient stores to allow for the restoration and maintenance of water quality. |
