Statewide Interest: |
In 2004, 2,100 patient visits were provided for these poor FL residents who have no access to primary care. With the expansion of the rural health clinic, an additional number of patients could be seen by nurse practitioners at a huge cost savings to the state - up to a 150% increase of primary care visits. Without the services of the clinic, these patients would wait until they are sicker and would present at the nearest hospital at a much higher cost to the state. Preventive care is a cost saving to the state versus acute care. |

Project Description: |
This funding would allow the purchase of a modular building or $450,000 to house the clinic and would allow the expansion of this rural health clinic, which serves over 6 rural, medically underserved counties, and which provides primary care to some of the poorest residents in North Central Florida - Alachua, Levy, Dixie, Gilchrist, Marion, and Putnam Counties. These residents have no access to primary health care, except for this rural family health clinic. In these counties, 43% of all households earn less than $25,000 per year; 16% of residents have annual incomes less than 100% of the povery level; 70% of children are in free/reduced lunch program at school. A majority of patients at the clinic are the working poor, are unemployed or underemployed, and do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid - 67% are white; 22% African-American; and 10% Hispanic. Most patients lack reliable private transportation and there is no public transportation. In 2004, Archer clinic nurse practitioners and nursing students provided over 2,100 patient visits. Most patients seen at the clinic have an urgent health care need. Archer Clinic expansion will increase the number of primary care visits by 15%. |
