Project Description:
Project provides for installation of a parallel wastewater force main under the Intracoastal Waterway connecting the barrier island sewage collection system to the sewage treatment facilities on the mainland. There are presently two force mains that transport wastewater from the barrier island to the main land. Although those lines have been inspected and found to be in acceptable condition, any damage to either line could result in substantial release of raw sewage into the Intracoastal Waterway and disruption of service on the barrier island, resulting in further sewage spills in the area. The parallel force main will provide system redundancy and allow the sewage flow to be rerouted in case of damage to either of the existing lines. Efficient and effective wastewater treatment systems reduce the potentials for hazardous pollution of surface and ground water.
