Statewide Interest: |
This capital outlay initiative has a regional impact for Florida Gulf Coast University. Since the age of the University does not meet the criteria for the ten year mark of remodel or renovation funding, it is necessary to request this funding to finish a project already in progress. This additional funding will give FGCU necessary classroom space to accomodate the dramatic increase in enrollment the University continues to experience. |

Project Description: |
The Florida Legislature through the PECO process funded FGCU $17,000,000 for the expansion of the University's library. Since the original funding, construction costs have increased more than 25% in Southwest Florida. In addition to the drastic increase in costs, FGCU has experienced enrollment growth in excess of the plan that was submitted to the Board of Governors. Under the current library construction budget, FGCU is only able to completely finish 66,448 sq ft of the 85,418 sq ft building. Because the final 18,970 sq ft of the library is currently unfinished and because FGCU has a high need for more classrooms to accommodate its growth, FGCU would like to convert the final, unfinished space into classrooms. |

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The additional 4 classrooms, including furniture and technology, are estimated to generate approx. 175 annual FTE or about 525 additional student headcount. On this basis, FGCU would be able to serve approx. 525 more students on an annual basis than it can at present. Over a 5-year period, this would amount to an additional 2625 students. The space will also include faculty space. Without the funding for the classrooms, it is very likely that an equivalent number of new students would not be admitted to the university. FGCU's request is in line with the emerging recommendations of the Access Task Force of the BOE/BOG and the needs of Southwest Florida higher education. |
