Project Description:
The goal of the C-51 Sediment Management Project is to remove organic sediments (muck) from the C-51 Canal in order to improve the water quality and habitat of the Lake Worth Lagoon and the Chain of Lakes. Although Lake Worth Lagoon and its watershed are now urbanized, significant regionally important natural resources remain that need protection and enhancement. Large muck deposits have been identified near Lake Clarke in the C-51 upstream of the S-155 structure where freshwater is dumped into Lake Worth Lagoon. The source of the muck is from nutrient-rich stormwater collected in the C-51 watershed. This fine grained material settles out during periods of low flow but is re-suspended and moved into the Lake Worth Lagoon and Chain of Lakes during high flows. The muck is detrimental to submerged aquatic vegetation and oysters which are targeted for restoration by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project (CERP) and the Lake Worth Lagoon Management Plan. Project alternatives will be evaluated and a pilot project will be constructed and monitored to guide decisions on including additional muck management projects as part of CERP and SWIM. Lake Worth Lagoon is a priority water body and is eligible for SWIM funding. This pilot project will include construction of a muck trap, the removal of approximately 55,000 cubic yards of muck, the construction of a temporary muck treatment facility to create a soil amendment for beneficial use and trucking of the sediments. This grant will provide a 50% match for construction and operation of the pilot project.
