Project Description:
The City of Wilton Manors respectfully requests an allocation of $500,000 to restore the 1958 historic home and 1926 carriage house at the Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve. The Richardson Historic Park is a 5.4 acre site located on the city's main commercial and retail corridor, Wilton Drive, at its southernmost limits, the South Fork of Middle River. The estate is associated with the family of George Richardson, Jr., former Broward County Circuit Judge and one of Wilton Manors' pioneer families. The property, threatened with redevelopment due to its prime location and pristine state, was acquired from the Richardsons by the City with assistance of Broward County and State of Florida FCT funds for public use as a park and cultural facility. The Richardson property is one of the most historic locales in the city and was the former estate of E.J.Willingham, boom time founding father of Wilton Manors. Two historic structures remain on the site: a circa 1926 "carriage house" or garage with second story apartment, and a large two story circa 1958 manor home of Judge Richardson and his family. The City would use these funds to restore the historic structures so they may be opened to the public. Among the needed repairs are: roof; doors and windows; entryway; structural repairs; mold remediation; flooring; electrical, plumbing and HVAC; kitchen remodeling and interior finishes; and painting.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The City plans to restore these two buildings and open them for public use within the context of the surrounding park. The carriage house and Richardson home will become the repository for community history, the home of the Wilton Manors Historical Society and other appropriate agencies, the site of historical exhibits relating to local and Florida history, and serve as a community center for cultural programming. These buildings will serve as tangible lessons of the importance of historic preservation in the strengthening of a shared sense of community.
