Project Description: |
The project requests state matching funds to support research planning/construction for Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. HSWRI intends to build a world-class marine research facility on land in Brevard County donated for this purpose by the Richard King Mellon Foundation. The Project will expand marine research facilities in Florida to support the expansion of HSWRI and respond to the needs and interests of a variety of research/education partners (USFWS, University of Central Florida, Brevard Community College. Specifically, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission intends to locate marine research facilities within the complex. The facility will support long-term sea turtle nesting research at the Archie Carr National Wildlife refuge, whale and dolphin standing response network for east central Florida, Indian River Lagoon dolphin and fishery research, manatee research, and long-term ecological studies of Florida's marine and estuarine ecosystems. |
