Project Description:
Currently the campus consists of multiple decentralized chillers with minimal redundancy. With the current configuration, a chiller failure can leave critical areas of the hospital without air conditioning and no means to back up the system. A loss of air conditioning can cause the hospital to shut down critical functions as well as negatively impact patient care and can cause property damage. In fact, during Hurricane Wilma, the chillers shut down and the hospital was without air for several hours. This posed a very difficult problem for patients and staff alike. The hospital is in the process of spending $2,000,000.00 to repair those damages to the chillers and to add immediate but temporary chilling capacity. The permanent solution is to install a central chilling system with built in redundancy. Based on preliminary assessment, the hospital would require three additional 1400-ton chillers configured so that any two chillers would be capable of handling the needs of the campus in an emergency situation. This permanent replacement would be part of a $15,000,000.00 project to replace our aging Central Energy Plant, an asset that has reached the end of its useful life.
