Sponsors: Posey

Statewide Interest:
Girls and Boys Town of Central Florida is a strong partner with the Department of Children and Families in helping them acheive their mission goals. Girls and Boys Town of Central Florida serves over 1,200 youth and families from all over Florida each year. Since its inception in 1986, over 15,000 youth have been helped. However, each year the needs are greater than the number of beds we have. Expansion will allow Girls and Boys Town to help meet the needs of our at-risk children in Florida.

Project Description:
In 1990, Father Flanagan's Girls and Boys Adolescent Emergency Shelter in Sanford opened to provide a safe environment for girls and boys in crisis, including runaway, homeless, court-placed and abused children. The Shelter provides short periods of intensive support to help girls and boys ages 10-18 identify challenges, make better life choices and work toward individual treatment goals. Emphasis is placed on family reunification, if in the best interest of the child. The capacity of the Shelter, in 1990, was 16, eight of each gender. The need to expand the Shelter's capacity to serve more at risk youth was, and continues to be, great. In 2000, in partnership with Walt Disney World and others, the Adolescent Emergency Girls Shelter was constructed on the Demetree campus and the girls were relocated to the new Shelter. This relocation assisted in doubling the capacity for both Shelters. In 2005, Seminole County approved $900,000 of federal funds to relocate and build a new Boys Shelter on the Demetree Campus. The construction of the Boys Shelter will allow for more effective admission, seamless continuation of services and the ability to oversee all expansion and services on the Campus. The grant, however, is $300,000 short for completing the construction and relocation of the Boys Shelter. Father Flanagan's Girls and Boys Town of Central Florida has distinguished themselves in working with the State of Florida to combat child abuse and neglect through the short-term services provided at the Shelters. The completion of the Boys Shelter will be an added benefit and service to the State of Florida.
