Project Description:
The Palm Beach County Long-Term Recovery Coalition is requesting $500,000 to hire staff and purchase building and office supplies in order to assist existing and future families and individuals impacted by disasters and become a permanent disaster response entity in Palm Beach County. The Coalition consists of 30 community leaders, nonprofit organizations, business, government, and interfaith groups and an additional 7 national organizations with local representation. 35 similar long-term recovery organizations were established across the state following the hurricanes of 2004 to fill the resource gaps once outside agencies and resources left the disaster scene. These organizations assume primary responsibility for recovery assistance within their respective communities by providing case management services that identify and layer funds from various sources and by utilizing volunteers to repair and rebuild disaster damaged homes. The goal of the Coalition is to provide on-going disaster recovery assistance to the residents of Palm Beach county by: 1. Engaging businesses as well as social service, not-for-profit, faith-based, and volunteer organizations in developing and implementing immediate disaster response and long-term recovery plans to enhance the efficacy of county responses. 2. Assisting individuals and families impacted by disasters with rent and mortgage assistance thereby limiting the number of families displaced and/or at risk of homelessness due to lack of affordable housing. 3. Repairing disaster damaged homes of individuals and families unable to afford repair costs due to insufficient assistance from insurance, FEMA, or other resources providing funds for this purpose by providing volunteer labor and building supplies. This will limit the further loss of affordable housing stock as well as expedite the county recovery process.
