Project Description:
The primary water inlets like Gordon River, Rock Creek and Haldeman Creek, and the historic flow-ways to Naples Bay have been altered by road and urban development over the last forty years. Large fresh water discharges through a large network of man-made canals and storm water outlets cause fluctuations in the salinity levels and current flow patterns. The goal of the project is to provide hydrologic and water quality improvement to the NAples BAy estuaries. The project components include retrofitting existing stormwater systems to provide water quality and flood mitigation improvements, restoring riverine flow ways, restoriing flow to natural systems that supply water to aquifers, creating stormwater retention, detention and filter marshes to remove mpurities going to canals and streams and to improve the hydrology associated with freshwater flows to the estuaries, restoring the natural systems of the estuaries to improve shellfish and fish habitat, and associated monitoring and assessment. These projects will be implemented through cooperative partnerships with federal, state, county, and city governments, universities, and nonprofit organizations.
