Upper Peace River Watershed Restoration Initiative

Requester: David Moore, Executive Directo Organization: Southwest Florida Water Management District

Project Title: Upper Peace River Watershed Restoration Initiative Date Submitted 1/5/2006 10:57:09 AM

Sponsors: Alexander

Statewide Interest:
This initiative is an important component of a comprehensive watershed management plan that will result in significant wetlands restoration, protection of a critical source of drinking water, and the establishment of a major wildlife corridor. Projects within this initiative directly support the District's Southern Water Use Caution Area Recovery Strategy to help meet the minimum flow for the Upper Peace River and will aid in the preservation of Charlotte Harbor.

Project Description:
The Upper Peace River Watershed Restoration Initiative is a series of water resource development puojects that restore minimum flows, storage, aquifer recharge, water quality and ecosystems in the watershed. Two critical projects include the Lake Hancock Lake Level Modification Project and the Lake Hancock Outfall Treatment Projects. The goal of the Lake Level Modification Project is to store water by raising the control elevation of the existing outflow structure on Lake Hancock and to slowly release the water during the dry season to help meet the minimum flow requirements in the upper Peace River between Bartow and Zolfo Springs. The goal of the Outfall Treatment Project is to improve water quality discharging from Lake Hancock to improve water quality throughout the entire Peace River and protect Charlotte Harbor.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The objective of this initative is to restore surface water storage, flows, aquifer recharge, water quality and ecosystems that have been lost, degraded or significantly altered in the Peace River watershed, which contributes essential freshwater flows to Charlotte Harbor. This initative will also provide a critical link to a major greenway that extends from Florida's lower west coast up through the Peace River watershed and Green Swamp, to the Ocala National Forest. It also serves as a major component of the Southern Water Use Caution Area Recovery Strategy by providing a cost-effective means of restoring minimum flows to the upper Peach River, slowing saltwater intrusion, and allowing ground water to continue to be a significant source of water supply for urban, agricultural and industrial users in the area.
