Statewide Interest:
This project will give Florida the distinction of having the Nation's only museum that showcases the contributions of Black health care professionals. It will also offer a centralized repository of historic and scientific information from hospitals, biomedical firms, universities and pioneering physicians that will be accessible internationally via the Internet. The Museum will provide Florida with a unique tourist attraction, increase the State's visibility within the biomedical industry and promote wellness and health care education. This will increase employment and generate new tax revenues for the State and local economy.

Project Description:
The National Medical Museum will highlight the contributions of minority health care pioneers via a unique array of exhibits and programs. Visitors will be treated to an interactive tour that presents the people, equipment and history of health care from the perspective of America's Black practitioners. Exhibits will combine artifacts from the past 100+ years with the latest information technology to present a unique, interactive educational experience. Galleries with talking kiosks and video screens will present DVD interviews and profiles of practitioners. Historic photos & documents will be displayed on corridor walls. Dioramas will feature vintage medical equipment and books will be displayed in period settings. Myoelectric arm simulators will allow visitors to operate a prosthesis with their own muscle impulses. We will begin the first phase of this project by converting the first floor of the historic Yaeger Clinic building into the Museum's first home. Construction and compilation of archival information and artifacts will commence in January 2006. The second phase will involve moving the Museum to its permanent home within the new Yaeger Plaza complex, which will be developed during the next 2 to 3 years.
