Statewide Interest: |
This project addresses an urgent local and regional need by providing significant, breakthrough treatments for Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease is the seventh largest cause of mortality in the state of Florida according to the Florida Department of Health. With over 400,000 patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease within the state of Florida, clearly, there is a documented need to address this disease with new drug treatments that can be made available to Florida residents on a clinical trial basis to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with Alzheimer's disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Americans spend $174,000 per patient lifetime for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The subsequent cost for treating Floridians diagnosed with Alzheimer's can accurately be estimated at $69 billion without taking into account the expected increase in the Florida census over the next ten years. This project is designed to significantly reduce this cost while providing no-cost treatment options to Floridians diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The project is designed to produce three clinical drug candidates for patients to utilize in clinical drug trials. |

Project Description: |
The project involves development of new drug compounds for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease sufficient to initiate clinical drug trials. We have clinical trial centers in Tampa and Sarasota along with three new drug treatments that we will carry forward through the FDA approval process. To proceed with FDA approval we will require preclinical testing sufficient to file an Investigational New Drug Application with the United States FDA. This project will result in three investigational medications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Three new drug candidates that will begin in clinical trials in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Alzheimer's Disease patients will be eligible for these trials at no cost to the state or to the patient. The savings to the state of Florida and to Manatee and Sarasota counties specifically for an efficacious treatment of the existing population of Alzheimer's Disease patients in these two counties alone exceeds $7,000,000 on an annual basis. |
