Statewide Interest:
To address the immediate and/or impending shortage of Florida's physician population by creating and expanding medical residency positions within the state of Florida. The residents will provide patient care under supervision and will complete a formal program of professional training as a condition for medical licensing and a requisite for certification.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Florida needs 2,500 new residency positions to reach the national average. South Florida has only 1,032 residency positions available, 80% in a single hospital. Estimates show that such an FIU program can produce (from the third year of operations) 12 new licensed doctors a year to add to the Florida workforce and in 10 years the program would train 120 residents ready for certification and capable to provide care to 144,000 patients.
