To obtain a building for a Family Life and Educational Skills Center that will house our Life Skills classes for women who are recovering from drug addiction; mentoring sessions with teenage girls; etiquette courses for young boys and girls; reading, writing and math tutorial services for children in underperforming schools so they will pass the state-mandated FCAT exam.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The Women Involved in Service to Humankind (WISH) Foundation requests $1.75 million from the Florida Legislature to expand our compendium of services. Among our provided are tutoring in reading, writing and math; mentoring of pre-teen and teenage boys and girls; small business and money management workshops; and program services to help women who currently are in long-term drug treatment in Miami-Dade County. The funds also would be used as seed money to obtaining provide a permanent facility where the foundation would operate and expand its programs to help more people with substance abuse challenges as they attempt to re-enter society. Such a facility in the target community allows us to consolidate our resources to make a greater impact in Miami. The entire community will benefit if their children are in tutorial programs instead of on the streets after school; drug-addicted women will learn about life-enhancing skills such as stress management, resume preparation, dressing for success, and budget management; more students will successfully pass the FCAT, which is perceived as an insurmountable hurdle for a segment of the population. Nearly all of the poor performing middle and high schools are located in our target area.
