Florida Meridian Plaza

Requester: Phil Maher Organization: Blueprint 2000 Intergovernmental agency

Project Title: Florida Meridian Plaza Date Submitted 12/20/2007 9:26:54 AM

Sponsors: Lawson

Statewide Interest:
The Florida Meridian Plaza has statewide interest and significance in terms of its Cultural and Natural History. It is the location where Tallahassee was founded as the State Capital in 1824 by John Lee Williams of Pensacola and Dr. William Simmons of St. Augustine. It is reported that Simmons traveled for 15 days by horseback and Williams traveled by sailboat for 25 days to meet in St. Marks. Together, they traveled northward on horseback until they came upon the deep ravine with the cascading waterfall which they called The Cascades. It was determined the ideal setting for Floridas Capitol building would be on top of the hill overlooking the beautiful Cascades. The Florida Meridian Plaza also is the location of the Prime Meridian Marker - the very point of origin that all individual property descriptions in the State of Florida begin. So much of the history of Florida is tied to the Prime Meridian Marker. All property designations begin here, all surveys begin here, and the Capitol City begins here.

Project Description:
The new Florida Meridian Plaza be at the epicenter of the 22-acre Capital Cascade Trail project-a stormwater retrofit project designed as a World Class Park. The Florida Meridian Plaza will be constructed at the point of the State Meridian Marker and the founding of Tallahassee as the State Capital. The meridian marker longitudinal and latitudinal axes will pass over an outline of the State Florida and its orthogonal alignment with the southeastern seaboard, flanked by sculptural pedestrian bridges on each side. The bridges will define the perimeter of a 3,500-4,500 capacity natural outdoor amphitheater that focuses on a stage set into the southeast quadrant of the Meridian Plaza.
