State of the State Response from Florida Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book

Friends and fellow Floridians,

Our home -- the Great State of Florida – has much to be proud of:

We are the 3rd most populous State in the Union,

We have a booming, tourism-driven economy that continues to grow each and every day-

We have a world-class environment that shapes our way of life,

With a diverse patchwork of Floridians who celebrate our differences as strengths,-

While finding common ground on the need for lower costs, with higher pay,-

Easier access to affordable health care,-

Safer communities free from gun violence,-

A good education for our children,-

And a love of freedom – REAL Freedom.

By my Democratic view, much of this has been put at risk by the divisive agenda of a Governor vying to be the most conservative in the nation.- 

Banning books?! That’s not freedom.

Limiting protests against the government?! That’s not freedom.

Claiming to be pro-business, yet attacking Florida businesses big and small. That’s not freedom.

Forced pregnancy and birth, even in cases of rape and incest!! That is not freedom.

Floridians struggling with the skyrocketing cost of living. That is not freedom.

THIS, my fellow Floridians this is the TRUE State of our State.           

The party of supposed limited government has developed a taste for control, and with it – an aversion to accountability.

Hiding behind a brand of “freedom” I don’t recognize, while the Governor amasses nearly unchecked power.  

We must ALL pay attention to what’s happening over the next 60 days, because under the current State of Affairs, things have already gone both too far, and yet not far enough.

My fellow Floridians, I am addressing you as the proud Leader of the Florida Senate Democratic Caucus --- a strong, diverse group of committed warriors fighting on behalf of everyday working people – but also as a lifelong Floridian and the mother of two young kids, with grave concerns about the path of our Great State.

It’s true, Florida’s economy is booming … but from the Southernmost Point to the Gulf shores, working people continue to struggle.

When Floridians can’t earn a living wage to create their own version of the American Dream, it’s time to ask, why?

When homeowners can’t afford property, health, and car insurance – with no relief in sight – it’s time to ask, why?

When the elderly can’t afford health care, and families are having to ration insulin – it’s time to ask, why?

When teachers and first responders can’t afford to live in the communities they serve, it’s time to ask, why?

THIS is the true State of our State – and Floridians – YOU - deserve better!

We deserve real freedom to earn a living wage –

To exercise freedom of uncensored speech, written or spoken –

To be safe from gun violence –

To work jobs that allow us to afford the basics, and still have some left for savings, and to do something special with and for our kids.

That’s the Florida that Senate Democrats are fighting for.

Our Caucus is fighting for Shavaughn and Ricky and Cristina – for Maxwell and Tracy and Stella – for Onelia and Paisleigh – for Yoni and Bernardo. Real people in communities across this state who work hard and deserve more.

It’s why Senator Polsky is fighting to make sure First Responders and their families can afford homes to live in -

It’s why Senator Rouson is fighting to make sure healthy food is not just for the wealthy

It’s why Senator Thompson is sounding the alarm on Medicaid – asking WHY Republicans are turning away federal funds to keep Floridians poor and sick

It’s why Senator Jones is leading the fight to keep AP Black History in schools

And why Senator Berman is fighting to raise teacher pay

It’s why Senator Davis is fighting for mental health care reform

And it’s why Senator Osgood is fighting to help returning citizens find housing

It’s why Senator Torres is fighting for our veterans

And it’s why Leader Designate Pizzo is fighting for accountability – going the extra mile, suing the Governor over illegal and immoral migrant flights

It’s also why Senator Stewart is fighting to protect our natural resources,

And why Senator Powell is fighting for clean drinking water for his daughter

And it’s why I am fighting to permanently remove the regressive tax on diapers for infants and adults – because parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting gas in the car or buying clean diapers for their baby - or their own parents for that matter.

Florida Senate Democrats and our Democratic colleagues in the House are here fighting for each and every one of YOU.

We don’t fear diversity of opinion, for we stand together, united by one common goal: creating a better, safer, truly FREER, and more affordable State for you and your family – a Better State of this State -- because it’s what we ALL deserve.

My friends and fellow Floridians, the time has come to lift up your voices

To speak up and to speak out!!!

Because if we don’t, things will only get worse!

Your elected Democratic leaders will never give up this fight, to create a better state for each and every one of us – regardless of age, race, religion, socioeconomic status, or anything else …. Because every Floridian, and every child, deserves a future filled with opportunity.

We’re fighting for the values of working people – the very backbone of our beautiful Great State.

We’re fighting to bring back free and uncensored speech, because that’s how great ideas, and how smart policy is made.

And we’re fighting because we believe that at the end of the day, we’re all Floridians, friends, and neighbors first.

We must ALL be allowed to live truly free, safe, and prosperous life.

Over the next 60 days of the Legislative Session and beyond, we need freedom-loving Floridians everywhere to get engaged and stay engaged. To make our voices heard. And to stand up not only for our own rights and freedoms, but for those of our fellow Floridians.

Because make no mistake – dangerous attempts to undermine our freedoms as we know them will continue to occur if we don’t stand up and fight.   

The powers that be have come for workers

For equality

For Black history

For public education

For your local government

For access to the courts

For voters

For women and for girls

For survivors of sexual assault

For everyday people just trying to get by

Make no mistake... we are only as free as the least free among us.

And together, we must fight.

Amigos, Amigas, Floridanos -

Nuestro hogar, el Gran Estado de la Florida, tiene mucho para sentirse orgulloso: 

Somos el tercer estado más poblado de la Union 

Tenemos una economía-turistica floreciente que continuamente crece todos los días 

Tenemos un ambiente de primera categoría mundial que forma nuestro estilo de vida

Con un mosaic de Floridanos diversos que celebran nuestras diferencias

Descrubiendo metas communes sobre la necesidad de costos menores, y mejores salarios, -

Acceso más fácil de salud económicamente asequible, -

Comunidades más seguras y libre de violencia con armas

Una educación buena por nuestros hijos,- 

Y amor por la libertad – VERDADERA libertad.

Desde mi punto de vista Demócrata, una gran parte de esto ha sido puesto en riesgo por medio de un Gobernador y su la agenda divisive compitiendo para lograr ser el más conservardor de la nación.

¿Prohibicióon de libros? Eso no es libertad.

Limitando las protestas contra el gobierno? Esto no es libertad.

Afirmando estar a favor de las empresas, mientras ataca a las empresas grandes y pequeñas de Florida. Esto no es libertad.

Embarazo y parto forzado, incluso en casos de violación e incesto. Esto no es libertad.

Floridanos que luchan contra los costos elevados de la vida que sigue creciendo. Esto no es libertad.

ESTO – mis queridos amigos y floridanos –es el VERDADERO estado en cual nos encontramos.

El partido politico supuestamente del gobierno limitado a desarollado un gusto de control – creando una aversión hacia la responsabilidad.

Escondiéndose detrás de una mascara de ‘libertad’ que yo no reconozco – mientras el Gobernador va acumula un poder descontrolado.

En los próximos 60 días, TODOS debemos prestar atención a lo que está sucediendo – porque el estado corriente tal como están – ambos cosas ha sucedido, se han cruzado demasiados líneas y también insuficiente líneas cruzadas. 

Mis queridos Floridanos, me dirijo a ustedes como la líder orgullosa del Caucus Demócrata del Senado de Florida, un grupo fuertes y diverso de guerreros luchando por la gente trabajadora. Pero también como una Floridana de toda mi vida y una madre de dos niños pequeños – con graves preocupaciones sobre el future de nuestro Gran Estado.

Es cierto – la economía de la Florida es exitosa…pero desde el punto más al sur hasta las costas del Golfo, la gente trabajadora siguen luchando.

Cuando los Floridanos no pueden ganar un salario para vivir y crear su propio sueño Americano, es hora de preguntarse, por qué?

Cuando dueños de casa no pueden pagar seguro de propiedad, salud o de sus carros – sin ninguna esperanza de alivio – es el tiempo de preguntar – por qué?

Cuando los ancianos no pueden pagar por asistencia de salud – y familias están racionando insulina – es tiempo de preguntar – por qué?

Cuando las professoras y los primeros auxilios no pueden pagar de vivir en las comunidades donde trabajan, es tiempo de preguntar – ¿ por qué?

Este es el verdadero estado de nuestro Estado - ¡y los Floridanos merecen algo mejor!

Merecemos una verdadera libertad – que nos pagan un sueldo que alcance para vivir!

La libertad de expresión sin censura – escrita o hablada -

Seguridad de la violencia armada -

Un trabajo que nos pague un sueldo que nos alcance a cubrir los gastos básicos – y que aún nos quede algo para ahorrar – y hacer algo especial con nuestros hijos. 

Este es la Florida por la que los Demócratas del Senado luchan. 

Nuestro Caucus está luchando por Shavaughn y Ricky y Cristina – por Maxwell y Tracy y Stella – por Onelia y Paisleigh – por Yoni y Bernardo. Personas reales en comunidades de este estado que trabajan duro y merecen más.

Es porqué la Senadora Polsky está luchando para asegurarse de que los Primeros Respondedores y sus familias pueden pagar una vivienda -

Es por que el Senador Rouson está luchando para asegurarse de que la comida saludable no sea solo para los ricos -

Es porqué la Senadora Thompson está haciendo sonar la alarma sobre Medicaid – preguntando POR QUÉ los Republicanos están rechazando fondos federales para mantener a los floridanos pobres y enfermos. 

Es porqué el Senador Jones lidera la lucha para mantener la clase de AP Black History en las escuelas

Y porqué la Senadora Berman está luchando para aumentar el sueldo de los maestros -

Y por qué la Senadora Davis está luchando por la reforma del cuidado de la salud mental -

Y es por lo que la Senadora Osgood está luchando para ayudar a los cuidadanos que regresan a la sociedad a encontrar vivienda.

Y es por lo que el Senador Torres está luchando por los veteranos

Y es por lo que el líder designado Pizzo está luchando para llamar a cuentas los responsables de los vuelos ilegales e inmorales de inmigrantes – hacienda un esfuerzo adicional, demandando al gobernador.

También es por qué la Senadora Stewart está luchando para proteger nuestros recursos naturales.

Y por qué el Senador Powell está luchando por agua limpia por su hija.

Y es por eso que yo estoy luchando para eliminar permanentemente el impuesto regresivo sobre los pañales para bebés y adultos – porque los padres no deberían tener que eligir entre poner gasolina en el carro o comprar pañales por su bebé – o por sus propios padres.

Los demócratas del Senado y nuestros colegas demócratas en la Càmara estàn luchando por USTED .

No tememos la diversidad de opinions, porque estamos juntos, unidos por una meta común:  crear un Estado mejor, más seguro, MÁS LIBRE, y más económico para usted y tu familia – un Mejor estado de este Estado – porque es lo que TODOS merecen. 

Mis amigos y queridos Floridanos, ha llegado el momento de alzar sus voces.

Levántate y habla!

¡Porque si no, las cosas se van a empeorar! 

Los líderes demócratas electos nunca abandonáran esta lucha para crear un estado mejor para cada uno de nosotros – independientemente de la edad, la raza, religión, nivel socioeconómico – o cualquier otra cosa. Porque cada Floridano – y cada niño – merece un future lleno de oportunidades.

Estamos luchando por los valores de un pueblo trabajador – la columna vertebral de nuestro Gran Estado.

Estamos luchando para recuperar la expresión libre y sin censura – porque así es como se crean las grandes ideas y las políticas públicas bien fundadas. 

Y estamos luchando porque creemos que, al final del día, somos Floridanos, amigos y vecinos PRIMERO.

A TODOS se nos debe permitir vivir una vida verdaderamente libre, segura y próspera.

Durante los próximos 60 dias de la Sesíon Legislativa y más allá, necesitamos la participación de los Floridanos que aman la libertad. Asegurando que nuestras voces se eschuchen. Y defender no solo nuestros propios derechos y libertades – sino también los derechos y libertades de los más.

Asegúrate – si no nos ponemos de pie y luchamos, seguirán ocurriendo los intentos para subvertir nuestras libertades tal como lo conocemos.

Los poderes públicos andan atrás de los trabajadores.

Por la igualdad

Por la historia de los afro-americanos

Por la educación pública

Por su gobierno local

Por el acceso a las cortes

Por los que votan

Por las mujeres y niñas

Por los sobrevivientes de agresión sexual

Por los demás – gente que simplemente están tratando de sobrevivir cada día

No se equivoquen – somos tan libres como los menos libres entre nosotros.

Juntos, tenemos que luchar.
